History: Citroen was founded in 1919 by Andre Citroen. The first cars were well built but inexpensive, and in 1924 the company produced the first all-steel bodies in Europe. In 1934, Citroen began production of the Traction Avant, the world's first mass-produced front-wheel drive car, using a unitary-type body, with no chassis frame holding the mechanical components.
In 1955 the revolutionary DS, the first mass production car with disc brakes, made its appearance. It used a stressed floor, with bolt-on body panels (in steel and aluminium), and a fibreglass roof. Height adjustable hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension system, plus power steering, braking and even gear-changing were powered by a central high-pressure hyraulic system. In 1967, Citroen introduced swiveling headlights in several models, although not all countries would allow such a thing. The company also owned Maserati of Italy for a period in the early 1970's, and built the DS-based SM Coupe, using a Maserati V6. The motorsports record is also remarkable, with the World Rally Raid Championship (five times), the World Rally Championship (eight times), and the World Touring Car Championship under its belt. Citroen was taken over by Peugeot in 1975, after overspending on developing radical new models, and in 2014, when PSA Peugeot Citroen ran into severe financial difficulties, the Dongfeng Motor Corporation took an ownership stake. In 2017, with finances in much better shape, PSA bought Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors Europe, then agreed a 50/50 merger with the Fiat group. Already now in 2020, many of the Opel/Vauxhall models have been changed to incorporate PSA platforms, engines, transmissions, and many other parts to take reduce costs across a greater sale volume than previously.
