History: Nissan Motor Company Ltd, was formed in 1934, and since 1999, has been part of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, a partnership between Nissan and French automaker Renault. The Renault-Nissan Alliance is the world's fourth largest carmaker.
From 1934 Nissan (under its Datsun brand) began to build Austin 7s under licence. In 1952, Nissan entered into a legal agreement with Austin, for Nissan to assemble 2,000 Austins. Nissan produced and marketed Austins for seven years. The agreement also gave Nissan rights to use Austin patents, which Nissan used in developing its own engines. By 1955, the Austin A50 was completely built by Nissan, rather than just assembled, and marketed in Japan. Nissan produced 20,855 Austins from 1953 to 1959.
In 1966 Nissan merged with the Prince Motor Company, giving it larger existing cars, such as the Gloria and the Skyline.
A venture into sports car manufacture began in 1961, with the Datsun Fairlady. In 1969 Nissan introduced the Datsun 240Z, as the company had correctly identified a gap in the sports car market after the disappearance of the Austin Healey 3000. The result was immediate waiting lists as sales took off. Albrecht Goertz (designer of the famed BMW 507), was credited with the 240Z design, however he was not solely responsible for it.
Nissan is now also the leading maker of 100% Electric Cars, with the Nissan Leaf, with over 200,000 made by 2015.
