EV Training Options

With the vehicle industry transitioning to Electric, it is becoming important for automotive professionals to keep up with all the new technology that keeps arriving through the door. It is also vital for those who own these vehicles, to have some knowledge, before opening any hatches and attempting to diagnose problems themselves. Most people have a pretty good grasp about what goes on in a Petrol or Diesel powered vehicle, but EV's and Hybrids are different, and can be DANGEROUS due to the presence of VERY-HIGH Voltages. They are safely engineered, and safe to use, but delving into parts of them without knowledge can be hazardous.

There are Cerification Courses, run by the Otago Open Polytechnic, and also by MITO who run an NZQA developed course series. The latter is only available to those who already have a Level 4 Automotive Technical qualification, and it costs around $4000. The Otago Polytech one, is much more open to non-professionals, but still costs around $3000, .. still well worthwhile, but requiring serious money and time.

For those that have more limited time and money, the Weber University in Ogden, Utah, USA run an online Certificate course, available for about US$750, (approx NZ$1130). In addition though Weber have generously provided a number of online resources completely free-of-charge, which delves into a lot of the subject matter. We have laid out the links to these videos, in the same order of subject matter, that the Otago Polytech course offers. Watching these should give possible students some grounding in the subject before they decide whether to go ahead in taking such a course, in order to obtain a professional Certificate, or just to gain an understanding of what lurks underneath the covers and what to be aware of.
